Dental Consultation & Cleaning

Preventative care is one of the main focuses of modern family dentistry. Not only does preventative dental care keep your smile healthy, but it works to prevent possible dental issues from ever occurring or stops them before they have a chance to develop into severe problems. Even if you feel you are in good dental health, many dental issues don’t cause symptoms until they are in advanced stages. Thus, routine dental consultations allows Dr. Pasha to detect and treat potential problems before they begin to cause you symptoms.

Another large part of preventative dental care are routine teeth cleanings. Professional teeth cleanings remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your teeth and along your gum line. While plaque can be removed by normal brushing, tartar is much harder and can only be removed with specialized dental tools. Professional teeth cleanings help to actively reduce your chances of developing tooth decay or gum disease.

Did You Know?

American adults visit the dentist less the older they get. A study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that while 79% of children ages 2-17 and 61% of adults ages 18-65, only 57% of adults over the age of 65 regularly visit the dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need a dental consultation and professional teeth cleaning?

Yes, everyone can benefit from a dental consultation and professional teeth cleaning, no matter their age or current level of oral health. Family dentistry at Pasha Dental centers around maintaining the oral health of you and your family. Because many dental issues don’t exhibit symptoms in the early stages, you may never know you are at risk. However, Dr. Pasha can detect possible issues early on and can help you change your dental routine to combat these issues before they develop into larger problems.

It is also important for you and your family to have regular professional teeth cleanings to remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth. While you can remove plaque with daily brushing and flossing, tartar is hardened plaque that you have missed over time. Tartar cannot be removed with brushing and flossing and can only be removed with special dental tools. Because both plaque and tartar harbor millions of bacteria, it is essential that they are regularly removed to ensure your continued oral health.

How often do I need a dental consultation and professional teeth cleaning?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends visiting Pasha Dental at least once every six months for your dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning. Seeing Dr. Pasha every six months ensures that he can detect possible dental issues early on. In addition, Dr. Pasha can educate you on proper dental habits to keep your dental health at its best. Regular teeth cleanings also reduce your chances of developing tooth decay and gum disease.

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry also recommend that your child’s first dental visit should occur once their first tooth has erupted, or no later than their first birthday. This first dental visit is important to start your family off on the right foot regarding dental habits, and Dr. Pasha will go over the proper way to clean your child’s teeth and which dental products to use. At Pasha Dental, family dentistry begins by establishing a dental home for your child, where we can get to know you, your children, and your family’s dental needs.

How can I prepare for my dental consultation at Pasha Dental?

  • Do I need to use mouthwash?

  • Can I do anything to improve my oral health?

What can I expect at my dental consultation and teeth cleaning at Pasha Dental?

At Pasha Dental, we strive to give our patient’s one of the best dental experiences. Our devotion to your experience means that you can pick your favorite musical artist or album to listen to during your appointment, as well as a favorite flavor that will be used during your teeth cleaning. During your dental exam, Dr. Pasha wears glasses with a special camera so that you can follow along on one of our iPads. In this way, Dr. Pasha hopes that you will not only feel more comfortable, but that you will be able to understand what is going on.

With that being said, your dental consultation will be broken down into three distinct parts. The exact order of this process can vary, however all three parts will be completed to ensure you get the most out of your dental appointment. The three parts of a dental consultation at Pasha Dental include a dental exam, dental x-rays, and a professional teeth cleaning.

Dental Exam:

During your dental exam, you will be able to follow along with Dr. Pasha on an iPad as he evaluates your teeth, gums, and bite. He will evaluate your teeth by using a special probe to test the surface of each tooth. He may also check for signs of decay or sensitivity. Dr. Pasha will also evaluate your gums for signs of bleeding, swelling, or irritation. He will also measure your gum pockets to determine if your gums are receding.

Your bite and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) will also be evaluated. Dr. Pasha will look for shifts in your bite and the presence of an overbite, underbite, or crooked bite. He will then check the function of your TMJ to make sure it is functionally normally and without pain.

At this point, the soft tissues of your mouth will also be evaluated. Your salivary glands will be checked to make sure enough saliva is being produced, your tonsils and throat will be checked for signs of infection, and the texture and size of your tongue will also be evaluated. Finally, an oral cancer screening will be completed that will look for signs of infection around your head, neck, lymph nodes, palate, cheeks, and tongue.

If dental x-rays have not been taken already, Dr. Pasha will likely send you to have them performed. All dental x-rays are performed quickly and conveniently in our office. If dental x-rays have already been performed, then Dr. Pasha will discuss these x-rays, as well as any findings during your dental exam. He will tell you how to improve your oral health and may also provide treatment recommendations. He will also discuss any questions or concerns that you may have.

Dental X-Rays:

Dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool that provides diagnostic information about your underlying bone structure, as well as non-visible areas in your mouth. During a dental x-ray, you will be asked to hold still in a few different positions so that the x-rays may be taken. You may be asked to bite down on plastic shapes, relax your mouth, or hold your cheeks and lips away from your teeth. Dental x-rays do not hurt and they only take a few minutes to complete.

In addition, Pasha Dental uses digital dental x-rays, which provide enhanced digital images that use 90% less radiation when compared to traditional x-rays. These digital dental x-rays can be taken inside or outside of the mouth. Intraoral x-rays, or x-rays taken inside the mouth, are the most common and can detect cavities, monitor developing teeth, and observe teeth and bone health. Extraoral, or x-rays taken outside the mouth, do not offer the same detail as intraoral x-rays and instead are used to identify impacted teeth, monitor jaw growth and development, and identify problems with the facial bones.

Teeth Cleaning:

Usually the final part of your dental appointment is a professional teeth cleaning. During your professional teeth cleaning at Pasha Dental, you will be able to select the music you want to listen to, as well as pick a favorite flavor to enjoy while having your teeth cleaned. You can choose one of the following flavors:

  • Bubble Gum
  • Grape
  • Chocolate
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cake Batter
  • Key Lime
  • Cotton Candy
  • Oranges and Cream
  • Strawberry Margarita
  • Pina Colada
  • Mint
  • Cinnamon

Your teeth cleaning will begin with one of our dental hygienists gently scraping off the plaque and tartar from your teeth using a special tool called a scaler. Then, your teeth will be brushed with a special electric toothbrush and flossed to remove any final remnants. Your mouth will then be rinsed to wash away the bacteria. Finally, your teeth will receive a fluoride treatment in the flavor that you selected. The flavored fluoride gel will be applied to your teeth and left to sit for one minute.

If you are at risk for or already have gum disease, then you may receive a deep cleaning. Deep teeth cleaning is pretty similar to traditional teeth cleaning, with the exception that your hygienist will also perform root planing. Root planing is when plaque and tartar are removed from below the gum line on the roots of your teeth. In patients with gum disease, removing bacteria from the gum pockets is essential to let the gums heal.

What can I expect after my dental consultation and teeth cleaning at Pasha Dental?

After your dental consultation and teeth cleaning, Dr. Pasha may give you certain guidelines to follow until your next dental appointment. These guidelines may focus on changing or maintaining your dental routine, changing your brushing or flossing technique, or changing your oral habits.Additionally, if anything was found during your dental exam, Dr. Pasha may make treatment recommendations and have you come back at a later time to complete treatment.

If nothing was found during your dental exam and you are in good dental health, then you will simply need to continue your daily dental routine. This should consist of brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time with fluoridated toothpaste and flossing once a day. On your way out of the office, you will also need to schedule your next dental checkup and teeth cleaning.

How much will my dental consultation and teeth cleaning cost at Pasha Dental?

The cost of your dental consultation and teeth cleaning will mainly depend on whether you need a traditional or deep teeth cleaning. If you have dental insurance, most insurance plans offer full or partial coverage for preventative services such as dental x-rays, dental consultations, and professional teeth cleaning. Out of all types of dental care, preventative care is by far the most affordable. Think of your teeth as an investment–it’s better to pay a little at a time to keep them maintained than to have to pay hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars down the road.
